Hey, everyone! In this review we’re diving into a head-to-head showdown between two killer 12V green laser level kits: the Makita SK106GDNAX (4-spot + cross-line) and the DeWalt DW0825LG (5-spot + cross-line). I’ve tested these lasers indoors and out so stick around for my hands-on insights, comparison table, and a video demo at the end. Let’s rev it up!

Why Compare Makita vs. DeWalt Laser Levels?
Laser levels are game-changers for DIY and pro projects, and green beams shine brighter than red for outdoor work. The Makita (4-spot + cross-line) and the DeWalt (5-spot + cross-line) are top-tier 12V models, but they differ in durability, visibility, and features. Let’s dive in.
Makita SK106GDNAX vs. DeWalt DW0825LG
Accuracy
Both lasers have ±1/8″ accuracy at 30′ (±3/8″ at 90′), self-level within ±1/4″, and are dust/water resistant. (See specs)
Specs
Both lasers are rugged, but their specs tell slightly different stories. Here’s how they stack up:
Feature | Makita SK106GDNAX | DeWalt DW0825LG |
---|---|---|
Self-Leveling Range | ±4° | ±4° |
Locking Pendulum | Yes | Yes |
Out-of-Level Indicator | Flashes every few seconds | Flashes every few seconds |
IP Rating | IP54 (dust/splash resistant) | IP65 (dust-tight, light water jet resistant) |
Drop Rating | Not listed | 6 ft |
Detection Range | 262 ft (with detector) | 165 ft (with detector) |
Brightness Settings | Two (high/low) | One |
Power Options | 12V CXT battery, AC port | 12V MAX battery |
Mounting | Optional bracket, compact without | Requires bracket |
Spots/Lines | 4 spots + cross-line | 5 spots + cross-line |
Quick Take: DeWalt’s tougher (IP65, 6 ft drop), but Makita’s got a longer detection range (262 ft) and an AC port for non-stop use.
Laser Lines vs. Spots: What’s the Difference?
Spots are like laser pointers—sharp and visible, at long distances, without a detector. Lines outdoors? You’ll need a detector past 5-10 ft in daylight, maybe 20-30 ft in the shade.
During a landscaping project I tested both lasers on a sunny day at 130 ft, aiming at a grade rod and here’s the result.
- DeWalt’s Spots: The DW0825LG’s spots were tighter, brighter at 130 ft, hitting the grade rod at 11’5¼” off the ground with crisp clarity.
- Makita’s Spots: The SK106GDNAX’s spots were readable but larger, less defined at distance.
Four Spots vs. Five: Does DeWalt’s Extra Spot Matter?

The DeWalt DW0825LG boasts five spots (up, down, left, right, forward) plus a cross-line, while the Makita SK106GDNAX has four spots (up, down, left, right) and a cross-line. That extra forward spot on the DeWalt is a big deal for setting right angles in bright conditions.
- DeWalt: The forward spot lets you mark a second point without a detector, perfect for outdoor layouts like fencing or deck posts. I set a 90° angle at 100 ft in sunlight—no sweat.
- Makita: No forward spot, so, to set a 90 at distance outdoors, you’ll need to use the forward facing cross-line as one of your points, which requires a detector because, again, you can’t see the cross in the sun, but you can see the spot.
My Take: Makita’s four-spot setup is solid for most DIYers, but DeWalt’s fifth spot gives pros an edge for complex layouts. If you’re working indoors or in small spaces (like my shed reno), Makita’s forward cross is enough.

Outdoor Line Detection
- Makita SK106GDNAX: Lines are detectable up to 262 ft with a detector. I tested this in a field, and the lines held strong even in harsh light.
- DeWalt DW0825LG: Lines max out at 165 ft with a detector. Not bad, but I noticed the detector struggled a bit past 150 ft.
Why It Matters: For big outdoor projects (e.g., leveling a driveway), Makita’s longer range saves you from repositioning the laser. DeWalt’s fine for smaller jobs, but you might need to move closer.
Indoor Line Visibility
Both green laser levels excel indoors, with lines visible up to 100 ft forward. I tested in hallways and large sunlit rooms:
- Forward Lines: Both Makita and DeWalt’s cross-lines were visible and sharp out to at least 100 ft.
- Side Lines: The 180° fan (left/right) fades past 10 ft on both, so you’ll need to rotate the laser to see lines on walls in large rooms. No issue for hallways.
- Plumb Dots: On an 8 ft ceiling, Makita’s lines were visible 3 ft past the plumb spot, while DeWalt’s faded after 1 ft. Makita’s advantage here helped with aligning light fixtures.
- Blind Spots: When set on 5′ tripods, the Makita SK106GDNAX’s line projects more visibly across the floor, while the DeWalt DW0825LG has a noticeable gap in visibility. Lowering the laser resolves this, but Makita still outperforms. On the floor, the DeWalt also shows a slight visibility gap compared to the Makita’s consistent line. (See pics)
Pro Tip: Makita’s two brightness settings let me dim the laser to save battery indoors, while DeWalt’s single setting felt a tad dim on dusty floors. If you’re working in tight spaces, Makita’s compact design (no mandatory bracket) is a win.
Bottom Line: Which Laser Level Wins?
The Makita SK106GDNAX green laser level is brighter with less blind spots. It has an AC port, can be used without a mounting bracket, and is detectable up to 262 ft. However, the DeWalt DW0825LG’s forward-facing spot was the deciding factor for me. I carry it in a small bag, leaving its bulky case in the garage.
